FAQ

What about the weather?

DRC trips run rain or shine ... unless conditions get extreme.  "Extreme" conditions may be stream flow above 500cfs (cubic feet per second), severe lightning, cold weather, and other conditions that may contribute to unsafe conditions for beginning river boaters.

Can I drink beer on the river?

As of August 1, 2016, Stokes County has banned the consumption and possession of alcoholic beverages on the river. We would like to point out that since our trips pass through a mile of Hanging Rock State Park (where alcohol has never been allowed) little has changed for our operation.

Do you rent tubes?

No.  No we do not rent or transport tubes.  We only rent canoes and kayaks.

When are you open?

The Dan River Company is open from April 1st to Oct 31st every year.  We are open 7 days a week (with reservation) and run shuttles on the hour from 9am to 1pm from June to September.  September to November we do regular weekend trips and weekday trips with a minimum  of 4 boat boat rentals.   We do advise you make a reservation, so we can be sure we have space on the van and boats for you.

Can I bring my dog?

Well behaved dogs are welcome at the shop and on the river.  We even have dog life vests available for rent.

How deep is the river?

Ninety percent of the river is ankle to elbow deep, but there are a few spots over 10 feet deep.

Are there any rapids?

Yes, there are about 30 class 1 rapids on our 6.2 mile trip.

Is it safe for my child?

Any activity associated with water carries with it intrinsic dangers, so we can never really say it is safe.  You know your child better than we do, so only you can choose what is safe for them to do.  We have life vests that fit children down to 30 pounds, so if they are smaller than that, you would have to provide a life vest for them.

Am I going to get stuck on rocks?

Well, that depends on your ability to read the river.  Some people hit lots of rocks even at high water levels, but some people can paddle the river in a drought without getting stuck.
