FOOD + WATER

Our shortest river trip takes most people at least 2 hours to complete. Many find themselves on the river for 3 to 4 hours as they relax, drift, and play in the water. That's a long time in the sun. We recommend at least 1 liter of water per person as well as an energy bar or two.

Of course, many of our boaters like to live it up on the river with a full gourmet picnic lunch. Just make sure everything is packed with a capsize in mind — and don't forget to manage your packaging and waste!

CLOTHING

Selecting clothes for a river trip is easy in the warm summer. A t-shirt and shorts, or a swimming suit will serve you well when the weather is nice. But, there are times when a little more thought is needed. Early or late in the season, when the air and water temps are cooler, it is a good idea to wear quick drying nylon or wool. Cotton gets wet and stays that way. In extreme circumstances a drytop or wetgear may be a good idea. You will probably also want to bring a change of clothes and towel so you can get dry before heading home.

HEADS

A sunny day on the river is a great experience, but sunburn is no fun. Wearing a hat and sunglasses is a good idea. Bring along some sunblock as well. If you forgot it all, do not worry: the DRC Gear Shop has you covered. We carry multiple hats, polarized glasses, and sunscreen.

FEET

When selecting footwear for the river, you want to be sure to get a pair of shoes that will not come off your feet if you end up in the water. Flip-flops may be good at the beach, but they are a terrible choice for the river. If you do not have dedicated water sandals, an old pair of gym shoes will work just fine.

MEDICATION + FIRST AID

 In addition to a basic first aid kit (bandaids, antibacterial wipes, etc.) you should bring along any necessary medications such as allergy medicine or prescriptions. While not common, it is also not unusual to encounter wasps and bees in addition to the plentiful slippery rocks and sharp sticks.
